Arthur Tappan
Personal Background Information:
I was born on May 22, 1786 in Northampton, Massachusetts.
I attended a town school until I was 15 years old. I was given a clerkship with Sewall & Salisbury, hardware and dry-goods in Boston.
For a time I sat under the preaching of William Ellery Channing.
I was an abolitionist.
Issues:
• American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society
• Supports feminism
• Supports Women’s Suffrage
• After the Fugitive Slave Law was passed in 1840, I refused to comply with the law, and financially supported the Underground Railroad.
Solutions:
o I helped form the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society.
